Toasts for All Occasions

Cheers! Skoal!

The practice of offering a "toast" began with the Greeks in the 6th Century B.C. as a way to make sure that the wine they were about to drink wasn't poisoned. The Greeks thought that if everyone had a sip of the same wine at the same time at the beginning of a meal, no one would dare poison it. Today, we don't worry about poisoned wine… but we often worry about finding the perfect toast that adds something special to even the simplest moment.

Browse through our list of classic toasts and pick out a favorite for the next time you are on the spot. Deliver your toast with enthusiasm and gusto, and your guests will be toasting you!

May you live all the years of your life.
Jonathan Swift

May you have warm words on a cold evening,
A full moon on a dark night,
And the road downhill all the way to your door.

To friends: As long as we are able
To lift our glasses from the table
To temperance in moderation.
Lem Motlow

May your troubles be less
And your blessings be more.
And nothing but happiness
Come through your door.

Here's to a friend. He knows you well and likes you just the same.

I drink to your charm, your beauty and your brains -
Which gives you a rough idea of how hard up I am for a drink.
Groucho Marx

May you get all your wishes but one so you will always have something to strive for.

Friendship's the wine of life,
Let's drink of it and to it.

The Lord gives us our relatives,
Thank God we can choose our friends.

May your neighbors respect you,
Trouble neglect you,
The angels protect you,
And heaven accept you.

May you live as long as you want
and never want as long as you live.

As you slide down the banister of life
May the splinters never face the wrong way.

May you have the hindsight to know where you've been,
the foresight to know where you are going,
and the insight to know when you've gone too far.

May the people who dance on your grave get cramps in their legs.
from the book "The Joys of Yiddish"

Here's to cold night, warm friends, and a good drink to give them.

May our house always be too small to hold all of our friends.

When wine enlivens the heart
May friendship surround the table.

Here's to a friend. He knows you well and likes you just the same.

May you always work like you don't need money;
May you always love like you've never been hurt;
and may you always dance like there's nobody watching.
Jack Canfield

May bad fortune follow you all your days
And never catch up with you.
