Bluegrass, wine make a good combo at Red Heifer Winery

SMITHSBURG — The narrow lane off Raven Rock Road zigzags up a steep incline, producing an increasingly spectacular view the higher you go.

At the top, you reach an open grassy hillside at Red Heifer Winery.

Grapes for the winery are planted at an elevation of 1,500 feet, which is perfect for the crops, since they like warm days and cool nights, said Kevin Ford, who owns the winery with his wife, Yvonne.
