Students will learn the basics of wine along with how to properly taste wine. Students will learn how to properly evaluate wine by standardized methods of analyzing appearance, aroma/bouquet, taste/texture, and aftertaste. Differences between the feeling of acids, tannins, alcohol, and sweetness will be taught during the session. Evaluation sheets with sample wine descriptors will be provided to help the student learn proper wine vocabulary. Uncork wine education will feature Port of Leonardtown wines. Cost is $25/person. Classes will be held the third Sat of May, Jun, Jul, & Aug from 6 – 7:30pm at the winery. Call to reserve your spot.

The Maryland Wineries Association is now a partner with the Cecil County Food & Wine Festival. This is very exciting! We feel the partnership with the MWA will do great things for the festival, which will do great things for the county.

The goal of the Festival is to focus on Cecil County; our agriculture, people, food, wineries and talented artists. By partnering with Cecil County Agriculture, Cecil County Tourism and Cecil County Arts Council, we believe this goal will be realized.

Port of Leonardtown Winery

Students will be taught the major red wine grapes (Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Pinot Noir) and their most famous growing regions, characteristics, wine making style, and common taste/mouthfeel. The same information for the winery’s other red wines will also be taught as well as brief summaries of lesser known red wine grapes. Uncork wine education will feature Port of Leonardtown wines. Cost is $25/person. Classes will be held the third Sat of May, Jun, Jul, & Aug from 6 – 7:30pm at the winery. Call to reserve your spot.

The correlation of wine to its wine regions will be taught so that students will be able to know what grape is used for the old world regions of France, Italy, Spain, and Germany. The distinction between old world and new world wines will be clarified so that students will be able to go into any retail wine area and make a knowledgable purchase. The language of the wine label will also be decoded so that the student will be able to determine from the label important facts like alcohol content, specific regional designations, varietal, year, etc. Uncork wine education will feature Port of Leonardtown wines. noon-4pm kids activities: hay rides, pony rides and more activities geared for the family. Come at noon for dressed in your most creative costume for judging, prized for adults & children. Music by Otherwize H2H playing Latin-Jazz Blends starts at 2pm with the first set until 4pm dinner from 5-6:30pm second set by the band Otherwize H2H from 7-9pm. The night will finish with a spooky hayride around the vineyard to end up at the bonfire to make smores, roasted marshmallows and have hot apple cider. The event closes with fireworks by Zambelli Fireworks.

This event will be at an offsite location (TBD). Elegant & mystical Black Tie event with live ballroom, big band era music. Come at 3pm and learn from a ballroom dancing instructor some of the basic moves. Appetizers and wine tasting will be during the instruction from 3-5pm. Dinner menu is paired with Detour Winery’s wine specifically and will be from 5-6:30pm followed by Yesterday Swing Orchestra where you can practice your new “moves” with your swing partner and dance the night away!
