Maryland Wineries Association Formally Opens the First Landing Wine Trail

The Maryland Wineries Association gathered with representatives from Generations Vineyard, Port of Leonardtown Winery, Slack Winery at Jubilee Farm, and Xella Winery to celebrate the ribbon cutting for Maryland’s newest wine trail. Representatives from local and state government offices attended the ribbon cutting and delivered the wineries with citations recognizing the opening of the new trail. The First Landing Wine Trail, located in St. Mary’s County, pairs one of Maryland’s oldest and most historic areas with delicious, local wine.

Established as a county in 1637, St. Mary’s County is home to St. Clements Island, the original landing place for English settlers who arrived there in 1634. Throughout its history, St. Mary’s City has directly connected Maryland to the land and sea and has been home to farming, fishing, and crabbing industries. Naturally, the rich ties to agriculture in St. Mary’s County have inspired new generations of Maryland farmers to explore and excel in the world of winemaking.

“Many Generations of Pyment and Cysers at Loew Vineyards” – Lancaster Farming

Direct-market farmers are often creative in their efforts to provide unique products and experiences for their customers, and this is evident in the offerings at Loew Vineyards in Mt. Airy, Maryland.

“While the selection of our wines has varied some over the years, there is one constant — meads — which are wines made with honey. This is an homage to my grandfather’s family legacy and the honey wines that were made in Europe at least since the mid-1800s,” said Rachel Lipman, fifth-generation winemaker in her family. “Currently those meads include a pyment — which is a blend of honey fermented with the juice of the grapes — and two cysers, which consists of honey fermented with apples.”

“Boordy Vineyards’ founder remembered for his wine, nursery and significance to the industry” – PennLive

You can’t write about Boordy Vineyards and its 75th birthday without focusing some time on Philip Wagner, a newspaperman and winemaking pioneer who along with his wife Jocelyn opened the winery in 1945 in suburban Baltimore.

On the media side, he worked for the Baltimore Sun for almost 35 years, replacing H.L. Mencken as editorial page editor in 1938. A longtime editorial writer, according to his obituary in the New York Times, his interest in wine grew to a point where he and his wife opened the winery while also managing a nursery by the same name. His legacy will remain his promotion of the use of French American hybrids such as Seyval, Vidal and Chambourcin in America.
