Distillery Lane Ciderworks, Maryland’s largest cider maker, is adding a new workshop to its popular cider-making and tree grafting workshop series, this one focused on how new varieties of apples are made — and why. Orchard owners Rob Miller and Patricia Power are teaming with Stephen Cummings, a respected fruit researcher and owner of Cummins Nursery in Ithaca, New York, for a three-part workshop Saturday August 11, from 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m. We will offer an exclusive look into the origins of the nation’s most popular apples and the explosion of heirloom varieties that are key to making DLC’s classic ciders. The cost is $35 and includes lunch and tastings of DLC’s most popular hard ciders. The workshop is co-sponsored by the Maryland Wineries Association Cider Working Group and the Brewers Association of Maryland.
