The Maryland Department of Agriculture has confirmed that a single adult spotted lanternfly has been found on a trap in the northeast corner of Cecil County near the border of Pennsylvania and Delaware. This is the first confirmed sighting of the invasive species in Maryland, and the department does not believe there is an established population of the pest in the state.

Mead in Hyattsville: Longtime resident creates buzz with opening of Maryland Meadworks
The Hyattsville Arts District is quickly becoming a destination for locally brewed libations — think Streetcar 82 Brewing Company, Franklins Restaurant, Brewery and General Store and the upcoming Sangfroid Distillery. In September, the city will be able to add mead to the list of options, with the opening of Maryland Meadworks by longtime Hyattsville resident Ken Carter. Maryland Meadworks will be the first meadery in Prince George’s County.
Mead is one of the oldest alcoholic beverages on the planet, with origins dating back to 8,000 B.C. and historic evidence of its production found across the world. It is made from honey and water fermented by yeast with an alcohol content ranging from 5-20 percent by volume. In the past decade mead has experienced a resurgence that, according to Carter, can be compared to the craft beer industry of 20 years ago where a “tight community exists that helps each other out and shares recipes.” Carter estimates that there are over 300 meaderies currently operating in the U.S. and he expects more to open as Americans get introduced to the beverage.
Top Maryland producers gather to taste their best in dry wines
This was an invitation only “summit,” which included host Chateau Bu-De and 11 other wineries from all over the state. Suggested and attended by the Maryland Wineries Association, it was a chance for some of the top producers from western Maryland to the Eastern Shore to bring two of their best dry wines, made from estate or Maryland fruit, and share those with their colleagues.
The goal was to swap tasting and production notes and offer constructive criticism, and to give all a chance to taste the quality of wine that’s being made. Most wineries brought a red and a white. The notes below include the tasting and production notes they submitted and the price for each wine.
MWA hosts Bonterra’s Joseph Brinkley for Biodynamic Vineyard Seminar
The Maryland Wineries Association recently hosted a Biodynamics for Vineyards Workshop taught by Joseph Brinkley of California’s Bonterra Wine in California, and hosted by Old Westminster Winery. Participants heard stories from the field, and learned tips for integrating biodynamic practices in their vineyard. Thanks to Future Harvest – Chesapeake Alliance for Sustainable Agriculture for sponsoring this event!
Maryland Wineries Honored for Comptroller’s Cup Wins
Catoctin Breeze Vineyard Cabernet Franc 2016 was awarded the “Best in Show” at the 2018 Maryland Comptroller’s Cup Wine Competition. The competition, judged by wine industry professionals in a blind tasting, was held in May. In addition, 10 wines from across the state were named “Best in Class” in their respective categories.
For more information or a full list of winners, visit www.marylandwine.com.
The Annual Comptroller’s Cup Competition is directed by Al Spoler, host of WYPR’s Cellar Notes, and brings together wine makers from across the state for the opportunity to taste and evaluate each other’s wine. The competition is blind: judges only know the composition of the wine, not the label, price, intended market or any other details. Panels of four judges are given flights of wine spanning single categories and asked to evaluate objectively.
“New wineries continue to delight the judges with their high-quality wines,” said competition director, Al Spoler.
Catoctin Breeze Vineyard is located in Thurmont on the foothills of the Catoctin Mountains. The estate vineyard benefits from a constant breeze, which gave the winery its name. “We set our sights on producing the best, terroir driven wines that our land could offer; wines that are handcrafted with minimal intervention, that truly reflect a unique time and place,” said Adam Fizyta of Catoctin Breeze Vineyard. “This quality fruit, combined with our unique small batch fermentation method, barrel selection techniques, and overall meticulous care in the cellar allowed Mike Lentini to craft this exceptional vintage.”
“Maryland wines continue to show consistent high quality, displayed by the very high percentage of silver, gold and double gold medals,” said Joe Fiola, Ph.D, viticulturist with the University of Maryland Extension. “Another exciting message of this competition was Southern Maryland’s garnering of nearly half of the best in class honors,” Fiola said.
Please RSVP if you plan to attend the ceremony on June 19 at 10:30am.
